The Pak Mun hydropower dam was built across the Mun River in Khong Chiam district, Ubon Ratchathani, completed in 1994 by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to meet growing electricity demand in the Northeast. Despite its cost, partly financed by a World Bank loan, the dam never reached its predicted output and caused lasting damage to the river's ecosystem and the fishing communities who depended on it. Opposition to its construction grew into the most well-known anti-dam movement in Thai history, and for 36 years those affected have held on to demands: the government must provide compensation and redress to affected people and permanently open the dam's gates so the river and communities can recover. This exhibition draws on an archive of photographs documenting that struggle, from the dam's construction through decades of protest to the present day.
The Memory Project (Memory Project) collects the history, memories, lives, and struggles of those who refuse to surrender. The project gathers photographs of rallies, campaigns, and protests by workers, farmers, university students, and social activists from the 1990s to the mid-2000s. These include the Northeastern Small-Scale Farmers Federation, the Student Federation of Thailand, the Committee for the Conservation of Natural Resources and Environment from 16 Educational Institutions, academic networks, NGO networks, networks of people affected by development and mega-projects, slum networks, networks of victims of work-related illnesses, and alternative agriculture networks.
Together, these networks founded the Assembly of the Poor on 10 December 1995 at Thammasat University, Tha Phra Chan campus, and at the Pak Mun Dam in Khong Chiam district, Ubon Ratchathani province.
Note: The Exhibition is part of the Chiang Rai International Performance Art 2026 Project: River Resistance at the BACC from 13–25 October 2026.
